Tan and Edward next morning.(CHIANGMAI 15 Oct 2007) Edward joined us yesterday at 7:45pm in the form of 3.5 Kgs of puzzled and inquisitive, thoughtful newness.

Son Number 1 for my new family, and I am overjoyed.  Tan is doing well though it was a long labour and she delivered naturally.  The doctors say Tan will likely need 3-4 days in hospital before they can release her and Edward.

My first thoughts upon seeing him, apart from an overwhelming joy, were just how much he reminds me of my mother’s father.  The family resemblance is uncanny.  I just hope he’s inherited my grandfather’s temperament and wisdom, instead of my less sociable attributes.  I’m sure Tan will give him her natural Thai calmness and thoughtfulness, and that in time he may just prove to be the tutor I need to finally learn a decent level of Thai language skills.

Edward and Garry (Dad) next morning. Now I’ve got my hands full.

I’ve still to get his cot and a load of other things that babies need – I’ve been snowed under with work the last 6 weeks and haven’t had time to get them.  Now he’s here, I can’t put it off any longer.

I’m overjoyed – imagine, finally getting the son I’ve always wanted, and me aged 48 too.  When’s a good age to introduce him to train sets and Scalectrix and toy soldiers and other important necessities like that?  Do you think he’ll be ready for them by Christmas?  Can I play with them too?

Garry
