UK Embassy Bangkok issues No-Go warning for all of Thailand
By Garry | April 27th, 2010 | Category: News Reports, Politics, Travel Warnings | No Comments »The British Embassy in Bangkok have issued their sternest level of warning to British nationals within, or travelling to, Thailand, with effect from 09:45am today, 27th April, ALL of Thailand is considered as a destination for only the most essential of travel reasons.
In their email communique to registered expatriates and travellers, the embassy states -
Dear All
We have recently amended our Travel Advice (see below – changes underlined):
We advise against all but essential travel to the whole of Thailand.
In the early hours of 27 April, substantial numbers of troops deployed in Central Bangkok. The entire BTS Sky train service has been suspended in Bangkok causing major disruption. On 26/27 April there were at least 8 incidents in various parts of Thailand involving protestors setting up barricades, in some instances leading to clashes with the security forces. There is escalating tension and the risk of violence across the country.
British Nationals may wish to consider if it is essential for them to travel within Central Bangkok. If violence breaks out, they should stay at home, monitor the media and this website.
This advice does not apply to passengers transiting Bangkok airport on their way to foreign destinations.
British Nationals should exercise extreme caution throughout the country, and avoid demonstrations and large gatherings, some of which have recently turned violent.
Suvarnabhumi airport is operating as normal. The route to the airport from Bangkok city remains open.

Normally in the face of such communications I would relate my own experience and opinion based on my observations of events in my location. On this occasion I will not. I am currently somewhat out of touch with city centre happenings nationwide, as I now live in a quiet and remote rural village, however, even here there is an air of heightened tension and general irritability – it may be due to the extreme hot season weather, or it may be due to the political tensions dividing the country. It is however, an unusual atmosphere for life in the sticks.
