When we first heard of these new papers a few weeks ago, there were only a dozen designs in the range, now there’s almost twenty with promises of more to be added regularly if the papers prove popular, which I have no doubt they will be.
From the moment I first saw the initial designs, I knew our many regular mulberry paper customers would shoot me if we didn’t get them added, so that’s what I’ve been doing for most of today.
You’ll find the lace papers in the Craft Supplies section of the GazLanNaThai store, under the Mulberry Paper section – use the links here for quick access (they’ll open in a new window. Use this link if you want to go direct to the Lace Tissue Papers.
I’m sure I don’t have to stretch your imagination very much to suggest handicraft projects that would benefit from having some of these papers lying around. Remember the three examples in the photos are only a small part of the range, but they’re amongst my personal favourites from it.
Mrs Gaz has already pencilled a few projects for trying out with a few friends and some of our part time workers. Ideas she’s got lined up include (in no particular order) -
- – Baby, engagement, and wedding photo albums, using the lace tissue papers as page interleaves. She’s also pencilled scrapbooks as getting the same treatment.
- – Making greetings cards for various events, using the lace papers outside as backing papers, and inside as lining papers.
- – Working with a local handyman to make window screens that support sheets of the lace paper in lieu of net curtains – someone mentioned an interesting idea of using non-fade glass paints to colour portions of the lace paper and we’re both keen to try that once she has some papers stretched over a screen-frame. They could become a new variant of dream catchers if it works well enough.
- – When time permits, because this will be tricky with such lightweight tissue papers, I’ve suggested using them for making a new variation of wedding favour bags similar to the standard ranges that have proven so popular for the last seven and a half years.
I’ve already tried the papers with die-cutting systems – they work well with the plate and roller systems such as Ellison and Sizzix machines, but not so well with impress-punches such as Punchies and QuicKutz. I’ve no idea if they will work well with CriCut style systems, though I’d love to find out – hint. The problem with the impress die-cutters is the paper fibres are so soft that they squash rather than cut, leaving incomplete cuts that cause the paper to tear rather than separate. Admittedly I was using a favourite simple-shape die, and it may have been a little too blunt for the test.
I’d love to hear your feedback about these papers, and your suggestions for how to use them. Don’t be shy, please leave your comments and ideas in the comment form below. Who knows, once people get used to doing that, we might even start offering freebies and prizes for the best ideas that people come up with.
