12th Bangkok International Festival of Dance & Music

Sept-MusicDance-SalsaKingsAttracting international performers from around the world, with classical music, opera, jazz music, ballet, modern dance and more, Bangkok’s International Festival of Dance & Music was inspired by one man’s vision to organize an annual international cultural event for Bangkok, on par with those staged in major cities around the world, and thereby also develop the breadth and depth of dance and music in Thailand.

The Festival founders approached HRH Princess Galyani Vadhana Krom Luang Naradhivas Rajnagarindra with the vision, and HRH graciously gave her support by heading the Festival Committee as Honorary Chairperson from 1998-2003 and then as the Festival’s Royal Patron until her demise in early 2008. HRH Princess Galyani Vadhana Krom Luang provided invaluable guidance and direction during the Festival’s uncertain early years and subsequent spurt of growth.

Sirindhorn-brown-jacketHRH Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn graciously accepted to be the Festival’s Royal Patron in May 2008, and under HRH’s guidance and direction the Festival Committee remain committed to the belief that arts and culture has a vital and unique role to play in the world, and that, apart from contributing to creative development in societies, it is also a unifying force cutting across race and politics.

The Festival has since grown in size and repute, and now, for each annual five-to-six-week season, approximately 1,000 performing artistes from around the world will fly into Bangkok to participate in a cultural extravaganza of classical concerts, operas, classical and contemporary ballets, ethnic and modern dances.

In addition to a loyal following in Bangkok and from other cities in Thailand, the Festival has also secured a reputation amongst theatre-goers in Asia and as far as Europe, and each year over 3,000 overseas visitors fly into Bangkok to attend the Festival.

The 2010 season is the Festival’s 12th (first cycle) anniversary, and will present 17 productions by artistes and theatres from as far as: Argentina, Switzerland, Israel, Cuba, United Kingdom, Brazil and Russia. The programme includes powerful operas, stimulating contemporary dance, exquisite ballet classics, thrilling classical concerts and invigorating ethnic dances.

All performances are at the Thailand Cultural Center,  off Ratchadapisek Road in central Bangkok.

The organisers ask the following of patrons -

  • Patrons should be in their assigned seat at least five minutes before the performance time.
  • Late arrivals will not be admitted until an intermission, or appropriate break.
  • All mobile phones, PDAs, watch alarms, etc. must be turned off, and attendees must refrain from making loud or continuous noises during the performances.
  • Any type of recording, e.g. photography, is prohibited.
