Sweet Langsat & Souvenir Fair, Uttaradit, Thailand in September

Throughout the middle of September, the lower-northern province of Uttaradit celebrates one of its local speciality fruits at harvest time, and re-earns the meaning of its name which translates at “Port of the North” given to it a century ago by the then King of Thailand.
The Uttaradit Sweet Langsat & Souvenir Fair is held at Uttaradit City Hall in Muang Uttaradit, the provincial capital. There is an exhibition, souvenir sales, a procession, the inevitable Miss Langsat Beauty Contest, agro-tours, and people open their homes for overnight home-stay tourists. In addition to cultural and local entertainment performances, there are competitions for local games and much more.
The exhibition focuses on the products of each district, a tourism exhibition, and district-identified sales of souvenirs and agricultural products. No provincial or harvest festival in Thailand would be complete without sales of OTOP products or displays of agricultural innovative inventions, and the Uttaradit Sweet Langsat and Souvenir Fair does not disappoint in this aspect. Reminiscent of rural English village fairs, there is a “trayed vegetable garden arrangement” contest, as well as hanging garden arrangement, and fruit basket arrangement, contests.
Langsat is a fruit grown abundantly throughout Uttaradit Province, which is similar in constitution to the more familiar Longan or Lychee. During September and October the Langsat will fully ripen, yielding a sweet and attractive smell (with matching taste).
In order to stimulate farmers to improve the variety and quality of Langsat, and to promote direct sales for farmers, the province organises the Langsat festivals at weekends in the middle of September every year.
