Once you begin travelling abroad, you quickly learn that the colour of your money does matter. As I described earlier this week, even in the highly internationalised environment of a foreign airport transit lounge, some currencies are accepted, others are not.

Whilst my experience in Chermenteyov, in 1999, regarding some shops accepting multiple currencies, and some accepting a select few, may or may not have been due to business operator's preferences, or due to airport rules, or even Russian laws, it did show me that travelling abroad requires a degree of preparation for the unexpected.

Making the right savings on your airfare can mean the difference between a 2-week and a 4-week holiday, in my case it freed up an extra month's expatriate living costs.

During the UK summer (Thai rainy season and therefore not tourist high-season), flight-only, return-ticket deals to Thailand, can still be bought for as low as £285 + airport taxes. These cheaper flights do not include accommodation or transfers, and normally require at least one change of aircraft.

For the irregular overseas British traveller, commercial shocks begin at the airport of departure. Long haul flights generally require that you register a few hours before take off and this places you, especially at Heathrow, at the mercy of the 'duty-free' vendors and concessions in the departure area.

In this series, originally written nearly a decade ago and now updated, I'm going to present both my experiences, and some thoughts about money saving tips, as well as some sound advice for first time (or even second time) arrivals in Thailand. These are likely to save you money, and overall, facilitate an easier and less stressful holiday, and that I am sure is a priceless bonus ...

Sometimes I amaze even myself. OK, I know that's a very ego-centric statement, but once I explain more I think you'll understand I'm actually being self-derogatory as well as a little smug.

First I need to give you the background ...

I'm a magpie, not just because I support Newcastle United FC, but because I collect, hoard, store, refuse to seperate from, items and information I collect. Just ask my Mum - she's desperate for me to ship my library of books from her garage to here in Thailand. It literally fills half of her garage and is becoming the bane of her life. I'm no different when it comes to digital data.

This morning, rummaging around in my hard drive array for something, I gave up "browsing" for it as I'd completely forgotten where I'd put it, and did a "search" instead. Amongst the literary archaeological treasures it unearthed was a folder full of the "lost wisdom of the ages" a.k.a. articles I'd written (almost a decade ago) about Thailand during my first months here ...
