SILK SCARVES, SHAWLS, & WRAPS
Siamese Silk, once a lost industry, was reintroduced to the world during the 20th Century, thanks largely to the efforts of Jim Thompson, an American, who encouraged Thais to rediscover the tradition of home-spinning and weaving, and sold their fabrics to Hollywood.
At it's simplest categorisation, there are two forms of silk fabric -
The heavier taffeta-style close-woven silk, which is used for everything from wedding dresses to curtains and cushion covers. It comes in a variety of weights and weaves, and is a favourite with quilt-makers and many other home-skills practitioners.
The other, lesser known fabric is classed as raw-silk and utilises thread that is spun once only, resulting in a more lightweight and looser-woven fabric. Some believe it was on raw silk that the original silk stockings were based.
Additionally, there are the woven-patterned, much heavier Siamese regional silks, each with their own distinctive designs, and much evidenced in the traditional costumes of Thailand. It is said that each village can be identified by the pattern they weave from coloured silks and gold thread.
Thai Raw Silk is the most popular fabric for our men's and women's scarves and shawls, for which we have thousands of customers around the world, including a growing number of wholesale and bulk buyers.
Raw Silk is spun once by hand, giving a looser and softer thread than multi-spun or factory-spun threads, and yielding softer fabrics when woven. Please note - most raw-silk scarves have some small flaws called slubs, which are part of the hand-weaving process.
- Our scarves are beautifully handmade, 100% Thai Raw Silk, and suitable for all occasions and any season.
- They are the perfect gift for a loved one, friend, family member, or even to treat yourself.
- The scarves are light, soft, and very comfortable to wear.
- They are suitable for both men and women (depending on the colour chosen of course).
- Each scarf is hand-selected and individually inspected before we purchase them, to ensure our stock is always "best of batch".
IMPORTANT: Photo colours - due to the digital photography & scanning process, and the reflectivity of 100% handmade silk, there may be slight variations in colour compared to the photographs displayed. Additionally, we ask customers to recognise that -
- every computer monitor (and pair of eyes) sees colour differently.
- the colour one computer shows may be different to that shown by another.
- all of our pictures are colour-balanced on our computer against the actual scarves colour sold, but that doesn't guarantee you'll see the same hue or shade on your computer.
- if a scarf photo shows a leaf design - it is a leaf skeleton and part of the packaging, not the scarf.
