PLAIN COLOURED MULBERRY PAPERS
Strong, durable mulberry-bark paper with a rough texture to one side, is the original saa paper style that is as close as possible to the 700-year-old original pattern. The texture creates naturally in the sun-dried paper.
The full size sheets are rated 75gsm with an actual sheet weight of 45-grams (approx 2-ounces) at the nominal 780mm x 560mm (30.7 x 22 inch approx) uncut size.
Our handmade papers are made with the traditional techniques of using a teak-wood mould or deckle (see photo). They take the size of the mould and resultingly have four deckled edges. (Due to the uneven quality of deckled edges, the dimensions of each sheet of handmade paper will vary slightly - typically up to 1cm.)
When cutting handmade paper, to smaller sizes with straight edges, please allow about 2cm (1") all around the sheet, for trimming to straight edges, before cutting.
Mulberry paper is called saa paper in Thailand and there is only one variety of mulberry tree that is used today. The Latin name for this is
Broussonetia Payrifera Vent and it grows throughout the north of Thailand, and in neighbouring Laos and Burma, where it is cultivated to also support silkworm farming.
This type of handmade mulberry paper (from Thailand) is also sometimes referred to by the Japanese name
"kozo", although paper here is no longer made from
kozo, which is a different genus of tree. Japan imports most of their mulberry raw material from Thailand and neighbouring countries, and make it into
"washi" and other papers.
These papers are as authentic as it gets in papermaking. They are excellent for craft-working, such as book & box covering, and scrapbooking, as demonstrated in our other product lines. All our mulberry papers are
archival quality, acid and lignin free, materials.
